Breast Reassurance Clinic for women and men aged 40 and under

For women and men aged 40 and under with breast symptoms or concerns regarding their breast health -for this group of women and men, it is much more likely that any breast symptoms are benign and following expert assessment may be managed primarily with reassurance. You will be seen by an expert breast surgeon (Mr Seni Mylvaganam) who will undertake a history of the concerns and then perform a breast and armpit examination to complete the clinical assessment. Based on this Mr Mylvaganam will discuss with you any further assessments that may be required, which could include an ultrasound which identifies an area of uncertainty – which can be undertaken by MUMS Consultant Breast Radiologist – Dr Aisha Khan – often on the same day of the consultation.

It is likely a core biopsy would be recommended to confirm any diagnosis. The aim of a breast reassurance clinic is to provide women and men with fast direct access to an expert breast specialist to evaluate their symptoms and provide a prompt, clear, detailed explanation, and diagnosis for each woman or man.

MUMS follows UK practice as described by NICE for the assessment of breast symptoms to ensure the highest standards of patient care and safety.  To adhere to this all patients must have a clinical consultation and assessment by a Breast Consultant and then if required an ultrasound can then be authorised and provided.

Ultrasound scan of your breast

An ultrasound scan uses sound waves to give a picture of breast tissue. Ultrasound gel will be applied to your skin and a probe is passed over your breast to produce a picture on a screen. This is the same technique used during pregnancy to look at a baby in the womb.

  • Unilateral ( single breast) £185
  • Bilateral (both breasts) £225

This scan looks at the areas where women have felt a lump/lumps and this scan is targeted to the area of concern. This scan would look at the whole breast for reassurance to exclude any concerning lesions. This does not require any preparation and is not painful unless the breasts are very sensitive.

Ultrasound Axilla (armpit)

  • Unilateral (single armpit) £185
  • Bilateral (both armpits) £225

This scan looks at the lymph nodes in one or both armpits to see if there are any abnormalities. This scan is performed if there is a lump/lumps in the area or if there is a suspected cancer in the same breast.

Ultrasound Scan and Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)

  • Fine Needle Aspiration £300
  • Laboratory pathology analysis £220

This can be performed if there is a cyst that needs aspirating or if there is a lump that needs investigation in one of the breasts. It is performed under local anaesthetic. This is not a very painful procedure and has very few complications. If the sample is sent to the laboratory for assessment the results will take 14 days to report a result.

MUMS Consultant radiologist will use a fine needle under ultrasound guided assistance. The sample – often referred to as cytology is sent to our partner laboratory for pathology analysis.

MUMS Consultant Radiologist will make you feel comfortable. You will be asked to lie down whilst the ultrasound scan and the sample taking is performed. The needle will be inserted into your breast to enable the consultant radiologist to obtain a sample of breast fluid which contains cells that our pathologist will analyse and report to us.

Core Biopsy

If you need to have a core biopsy, then MUMS offers this service. Our Consultant Radiologist – Dr Aisha Khan will perform this under ultrasound guided assistance. The Breast Surgeon will decide if this diagnostic test is required. This procedure will involve the Radiologist inserting a needle into your breast to take a tissue sample. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area.

Ultrasound Scan and Core Biopsy

  • Core biopsy £350
  • Laboratory pathology analysis £220

A core biopsy of the breast is a test which involves taking a small sample of tissue from an abnormal area in the breast. If the abnormality can be easily felt, the core biopsy will be performed by Dr Aisha Khan without ultrasound scan guidance.  If the abnormality is not easily felt, Dr Aisha Khan will use an ultrasound scan to guide her to the abnormality. The biopsy itself does not take very long to perform and usually the whole process is finished in 15 to 20 minutes.
After cleaning the skin, the area is numbed using a local anaesthetic, which may sting briefly. A small cut may be made in the skin to assist in placing the biopsy needle close to the abnormality. The needle is attached to a small device which quickly fires the needle into the abnormality taking a narrow tubular core of tissue. The device makes a loud clicking noise (we will let you hear the noise first, so it does not take you by surprise). This process may be repeated several times to ensure an adequate sample is obtained. You may feel a slight discomfort and a sensation of pressure for a short time.

The tissue sample will then be sent to our partner laboratory and analysed by an experienced pathologist who will be able to make a diagnosis by studying the sample under a microscope. You will be able to go home after the procedure and return to normal activities the next day.
