No-Scalpel Vasectomy (Male Sterilisation) at MUMS

Outstanding Patient Experience - Dr Sriram - MUMS No Scalpel Vasectomy is a quick, safe, and simple operation as a method of permanent contraception.

This advanced surgical procedure also known as minimally invasive vasectomy is performed by Dr B. Sriram.

Dr Sriram has been performing this procedure since 2006 and is very experienced in the technique, having performed several thousand.

The procedure is performed through a tiny puncture hole in the skin of the scrotum after numbing the area with a local anaesthetic.

The two tubes which transport the sperms called vasa-deferentia (‘vas’ for short) are divided, separated, and heat-sealed using the cautery technique. There are no stitches, and the tiny wound heals quickly.

There are no waiting times at MUMS, and you do not need a referral from your GP.

This procedure is available on Fridays and is performed in a minor surgery room at our prestigious clinic in Solihull.

At MUMS we offer No Scalpel Vasectomy – the total cost for Consultation, Procedure, follow up and Post Procedure Semen Analysis is £660.00.

Consultation: Dr Sriram offers one pre-procedure consultation which can be done remotely or face to face. This is the opportunity for you to discuss the procedure, permanency and failure rates, risks, and complications and to answer any questions. This also assesses your suitability to have the procedure. We take the full payment of £660.00 when booking your initial consultation. If after the consultation, the procedure does not go ahead – you will be refunded £560.00.
Procedure and follow up: Following the pre-procedure consultation you will be scheduled for the procedure at our clinic in Solihull. You will be asked to provide written consent on the day of the procedure. The operation takes approximately 15-30 mins, but we allow one hour for the appointment and a chaperone/nursing assistant will be present to assist Dr Sriram and support you. Following the procedure, you will receive a follow up telephone call.
1. Semen Testing: You will be required to have a semen test after 4 months which is included in the fee you have paid. In some cases, another test at 7 months may be required. We will cover the cost of this extra test.

Face to Face consultations will take place on Fridays at MUMS.

Following discharge from the clinic following the procedure – you will be asked to make a free of charge follow up appointment with Dr Sri

You will be prompted to provide a sample for a post procedure semen test. Dr Sri will ensure your details are entered on MUMS systems so that you receive a kit from our partner laboratory.

Dr B. Sriram

Dr Balachandran Sriram is a General Practitioner and a Primary Care Surgeon specialising in Vasectomies and has been performing the no-scalpel technique since 2006. Dr Sriram also has experience as a Dermatology surgeon and does weekly operating sessions in the NHS Hospitals in Coventry and Warwickshire. He is a member of the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care.

Dr Sriram worked as a surgeon in the hospital setting before becoming a GP and is dually qualified with the FRCS (England) and MRCGP (UK) degrees. His years of surgical experience, calm demeanour and sleek technique helps put patients at ease.

Dr Sriram is currently a Principal trainer in vasectomy and helps in teaching, guiding, and mentoring other doctors (UK and overseas) to perform the technique independently.

WHAT IS A VASECTOMY?

Vasectomy is a quick, safe, simple, and effective operation as a method of permanent contraception for men. A vasectomy is more than 99% effective. It is considered permanent, so once it is done you do not have to think about contraception again.
WHAT IS NO SCALPEL VASECTOMY?

No scalpel vasectomy is also called Minimal invasive Vasectomy. This is an advanced surgical procedure, firstly local anaesthesia is used to numb the skin of the scrotum, then a sharp forceps is used to make a small puncture hole. The tubes which transport the sperm are delivered through this hole. Usually both sides can be done through one puncture hole. The puncture wound is also heat sealed. There is very little bleeding and no stitches with this procedure. It is thought to be less painful and less likely to cause complications than a conventional vasectomy.
IS VASECTOMY RIGHT FOR ME?

You should only have a vasectomy if you are certain that you do not want any more children or do not want children at all. It is important that you discuss this with your partner before you make any decisions. Although it isn’t a legal requirement – you should both agree to vasectomy. Reversal of vasectomy is very difficult. There are other options and there are alternative contraceptive methods which should be considered before vasectomy. Vasectomy should be seen as a permanent procedure. You may be more likely to be accepted for a vasectomy if you are over 30 and have had children.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER A VASECTOMY?

It is common to have some mild discomfort, swelling and bruising of your scrotum for a few days after the vasectomy. Some men can have ongoing pain in their testicles. This is about 3 in 100. Painkiller medication such as paracetamol helps. Do not take aspirin as this will cause bruising and bleeding. You will receive one telephone call from Dr Sriram to check on you. If you have any queries before you receive this call, please contact the clinic. Blood in the semen is common within the first few ejaculations following vasectomy and not harmful in anyway.
HOW WILL I KNOW THAT MY VASECTOMY HAS WORKED?

We test your semen 4 months following the procedure. Once tests have confirmed that your semen is sperm-free, the vasectomy is considered successful, and you can stop using additional contraception. Some men may need more than 1 test to confirm the vasectomy has worked. But until it has been confirmed that your semen is free of sperm, continue to use another form of contraception.
IS REVERSAL POSSIBLE?

Vasectomy should be considered a permanent procedure. Reversing the vasectomy procedure does not guarantee success. It would need to be done privately as this reversal operation is not funded by the NHS. The longer you leave it – the less chances the reversal will be successful.
DOES IT AFFECT MY SEX DRIVE?

Vasectomy does not affect your sex drive. Testosterone continues to be produced. Your sex drive, sensation, and ability to have an erection will not be affected.
WHEN CAN I RESUME HAVING SEX?

Avoid sexual activity for at least 3 days after having a vasectomy. You will need to continue with your chosen contraception method for 4 months after the procedure. How long this takes varies from man to man. There is still a risk of pregnancy during this time.
WHEN CAN I STOP OTHER FORMS OF CONTRACEPTON?

You will need to use contraception for at least 16 weeks after the procedure. We will test your semen sample 4 months after the operation. Once tests have confirmed that your semen is sperm-free, the vasectomy is considered successful, and you can stop using additional contraception. Up to 2 semen tests are done after the operation to make sure that all the sperm have gone. A vasectomy does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so you may need to use condoms as well.
WHEN CAN I RETURN TO WORK?

You can return 1 or 2 days after the procedure. Avoid sports and heavy lifting.
IS THERE ANY RISK OF VASECTOMY CAUSING CANCER ?

Although prostate cancer and testicular cancer can occur in men who have had a vasectomy, research suggests that a vasectomy does not increase your risk of cancer.
CAN I STORE SPERM IN A SPERM BANK, JUST IN CASE?

This is possible but should not be relied upon. It is expensive too.
