Health anxiety is a common experience but it can become distressing and significantly impact our day to day lives. Health anxiety is characterised by worrying about health, for example, fixating on the possibility of serious illness, feeling fearful when experiencing physical symptoms, seeking a lot of reassurance and frequently looking at health information on the internet. Sometimes, this anxiety can become difficult to manage, impacting how we feel and our daily activities. There are ways to manage health anxiety to help you feel better.
You do not need a referral from a GP - we have great reviews, conduct sessions remotely and there are no waiting times.
You can choose to have counselling at MUMS with our psychotherapists who offer CBT or with Katrin who has a doctorate-level degree in Psychology. Katrin has studied how people think, feel and behave, all in the context of health theories and scientifically validated research. This enables her to explore your experiences with you in a comprehensive way, using evidence-based tools and techniques. The aim of our work together is to provide support in understanding and changing important factors for you, to improve your health.
Cost for an appointment with Dr Katrin Hulme - £115
Appointments are remote – by telephone, Zoom or MS Teams or even Facetime if you prefer and are 50 minutes in duration
The number of appointments can depend on the level of support required, health condition(s) and individual needs. 6-12 fortnightly appointments are typical, but we will discuss a plan together that works for you.
Making an appointment with Katrin is easy – we organise this at a time and day to suit you, take the full payment and your preferred session arrangement – MS Teams, Facetime, zoom etc and Katrin will initiate the session as we enter it into her diary. You can simply get in touch with us following each session to organise the next session when it suits you and Katrin.
Katrin will advise you if she feels our counsellors would be better suited to support you.
One-to-one work starts with an initial assessment to better understand your needs, without making assumptions about you or your life. You will be asked questions to assess your health status, to gain a thorough understanding of the difficulties you are experiencing.
It is a space for discussing and working through problems together. You will receive emotional support and guidance, including learning about psychological difficulties and strategies to manage them, address health related issues and how to make lasting changes.
A referral to see a Psychologist does not mean that you are not coping or that the problems are ‘fake’ or ‘all in your head’. Katrin’s work explores the psychological and emotional impact that a health condition can have on your life, aiming to reduce distress and improve your overall wellbeing.
MUMS has been established for over 20 years and offers private healthcare to men, women and children – we are a kind, caring and professional diagnostic treatment centre in Solihull. We pride ourselves on bespoke and holistic care.
Both counsellors and psychologists support people psychologically but they have different educational backgrounds, areas of focus and specialisation. Counsellors have a counselling diploma and often also have a master’s degree. Psychologists have a doctoral-level degree.
Psychologists focus more on using theory, science, and clinical knowledge to understand their clients’ psychology and help them gain a better quality of life and treat underlying distress. Health Psychologists do this in the specific context of health, helping people manage health conditions and optimise their health.
Katrin has worked in Health Psychology for over 10 years. She studied Natural Sciences & Psychology at Durham University, before doing an MSc in Health Psychology, whilst working as an Assistant Psychologist in the NHS. She then completed the Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology. She went on to work at King’s College London, where she developed online programmes for managing fatigue and treating anxiety and depression in people with chronic health conditions. She has worked clinically, working in an NHS pain clinic during her doctorate and then as part of clinical research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and other chronic health conditions. She also has experience working in the digital health sector, conceptualising and developing evidence-based digital interventions to support patients across a range of health conditions.
Katrin is based in Cambridge so provides remote appointments. Research shows that online support can have equivalent outcomes as in-person appointments and has added benefits including timing flexibility for the client and psychologist and less travel for clients. If conducting sessions remotely is a concern, please reach out to the team.
It can be difficult to predict the exact number of appointments or the overall duration of therapy – it very much depends on your needs, your goals for therapy and the difficulties you are facing. It is something we discuss together.
There are general guidelines based on research and clinical experience which can give a helpful framework:
Research suggests that even for more severe difficulties, some improvements can often be seen within 8 sessions.
Again, we will discuss your needs and your goals for therapy and make a plan together.
