Dr Vijay Iyer and Dr Seema Garg offer consultations for the following common paediatric dermatology conditions:

Paediatric and Adolescent Eczema

Eczema presents as itchy dry and often inflamed skin patches which can be treated with medication and emollients to reduce discomfort. Our Paediatric Dermatologists will assess the eczema, advise on treatment, prescribe, and follow up to ensure the treatment has had the desired effect.

Teenage and Adolescent Acne

Skin conditions such as acne can leave your teenager or adolescent feeling embarrassed and self-conscious. If your child has acne and you have tried over the counter medications and want a specialist opinion to control the acne, avoid scarring etc - then you can consult with our Paediatric Dermatologists at MUMS – to discuss various treatments including oil reduction production to tackle the acne. The doctors will decide with you which is the most appropriate and best treatment for the acne, based on your child’s age and the type of acne. The risks, benefits etc will be discussed in terms of topical and oral medication and/or a combination.

Prescriptions are issued for moderate acne and prevent hair follicle plugging.

Antibiotics kill bacteria and can be used in combination with retinoid topical applications. Antibiotics are used for moderate acne and often the first choice.

Combined oral contraceptives which combine progestin and oestrogen may be an option for some adolescent girls with acne.

Anti-androgen medications can be considered for girls if oral antibiotics are not helping.

Special medication for acne is prescribed for adolescents with severe acne that has not responded to other forms of treatment. Some drugs can only be prescribed by a Consultant Dermatologist who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of acne. If MUMS dermatologist prescribes this for you – he/she will explain the side effects and monitor your child’s liver function throughout the cycle of treatment. A liver function test costs £90 at MUMS.

At MUMS we understand the constraints of the NHS waiting times. Opting for a private paediatric dermatologist can remove undue stress, read more about teenage and adolescent acne treatment.

The below information may be useful:

  • Avoid washing affected areas more than twice daily to reduce irritation.
  • Use a mild cleanser and only lukewarm water.
  • Avoid squeezing blackheads and spots to avoid scarring.
  • Do not use too many cosmetics and makeup and always remove before bedtime.
  • Avoid your hair falling on your face.
  • Be patient with treatment – results are not quick but work well after a few weeks.

What to Expect

We have been providing consultant paediatric services at MUMS Solihull since 2021 – we receive award winning patient testimonials regarding the care he provides.

If the dermatologist needs additional diagnostics and tests – they will perform these during the consultation – such as blood tests, biopsies, urine tests, dermoscopy, swabs for infections. These incur additional charges and results are rapid. Results of tests are provided and interpreted free of charge remotely.

Repeat prescriptions cost £20

Seeing a Private Paediatric Dermatologist in a private clinic means that your child, teenager, or adolescent does not have to wait to be seen – as is the case in the NHS. Appointments are longer and individualised care is optimised. Early diagnosis and treatment prevent children’s and teenagers skin complaints from getting to the stage that is hard to treat.
