Hepatitis A is highly infectious and affects your liver. If you are planning a holiday where sanitation is poor such as Africa, India, or South America and indeed the Far East – it is recommended that you are immunised against Hepatitis A. The symptoms of Hepatitis A are nausea, fever, diarrhoea. Some people also suffer muscle and joint pain.

We recommend you have this 2 to 4 weeks before you travel. The vaccine will provide protection for a year.

If you have the booster then you will be protected from Hepatitis A for at least 10 years.

At MUMS we also offer Hepatitis testing. The Hepatitis A immunity level check will give you a clear indication of your immunity levels.

The Hepatitis A injection is given in your upper arm. You may experience a temperature and tiredness following the vaccine.

If you are travelling to an area where there is a Hepatitis A endemic, then you should be extra vigilant with food and hygiene.

How the vaccine is given

The vaccine is given by injection into a muscle.

Side effects

Common side effects include soreness, swelling, or a small lump at the injection site, a slightly raised temperature, itchy skin, aching muscles, and feeling drowsy.
