A Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) test is a blood test used to detect an active Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

What the test looks for

  • HBsAg is a protein on the surface of the Hepatitis B virus.
  • If it’s found in your blood, it means the virus is currently present.

How to interpret results

  • HBsAg Positive
    • You have an active Hepatitis B infection
    • This could be:
      • Acute (recent infection), or
      • Chronic (infection lasting more than 6 months)
    • You can potentially transmit the virus to others
  • HBsAg Negative
    • No active Hepatitis B infection detected
    • You may be:
      • Never infected
      • Recovered from a past infection
      • Successfully vaccinated (vaccination does not cause HBsAg to be positive)

Doctors usually interpret HBsAg along with:

  • Anti-HBs (surface antibody)
  • Anti-HBc (core antibody, IgM or total)
These together help determine whether you are infected, immune, vaccinated, or recovered.

Hepatitis B Core Antibody Test information can be found by visiting this link.

Hepatitis B core antibodies (anti-HBc) are antibodies your immune system makes against the core (nucleocapsid) protein of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). They’re used to tell whether you’ve ever been infected with HBV and to help interpret other hepatitis B tests.

Hepatitis B is a virus and can be contracted with infected blood, unprotected sex, sharing needles and mothers can pass it to their babies during childbirth. Hepatitis B can also be caught easily from blood and therefore can be caught on surfaces, cuts, and tears.

Treatment of Hepatitis B means resting and being monitored by a specialist consultant.

Do try to determine the time between when you suspect you may have contracted the Hepatitis B Virus in readiness for the Hepatitis B Test at MUMS as the incubation period is important.
