Expression lines such as wrinkles are one of the first signs of ageing and more commonly occur in sun exposed areas. On the face wrinkles most commonly appear around the eyes (commonly called crow’s feet), around the mouth (smoker's lines), the forehead and between the eyes (frown lines). Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles, repeatedly creasing the skin, often results in the development of deep frown lines, forehead, and crow’s feet. Some lines around the chin, nose, mouth, and muscle bands on the neck can also be treated as well as excessive sweating.

Consultations for anti-wrinkle injections

The consultation (free of charge) is essential before undergoing any aesthetic treatments, to safely administer and provide high quality results. We will first take an in-depth medical history and face to face examination of the concerning area. Dr Adeline will then work with you to develop a treatment plan for your needs and goals. Please attend the consultation with no makeup and without children so that the focus can be on you. Photographs and simple treatment can be performed on the day. However - if a more complex treatment plan is offered you will always be given time to think it over before proceeding. Of course, consultation and treatment can be on the same day.

Unfortunately - we cannot offer aesthetic treatments to the following groups:

  • Actively trying for a baby or undergoing IVF treatments
  • Patients who are currently pregnant
  • Patients who are breastfeeding

Consultations are carried out by highly trained clinicians in aesthetic medicine. Anti-wrinkle injections are commonly used in cosmetic dermatology. They work by reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles by relaxing the muscles under the skin. They are considered safe and well-tolerated with a visible improvement of wrinkles while expressions can be preserved. There is a preventative effect if maintained regularly.

Anti-wrinkle Treatments

Anti-wrinkle treatments are a prescription only treatment and are performed using tiny injections. They work by temporarily and reversibly blocking nerve signals to specific areas of the facial muscles, allowing the muscles to relax. As a result, the skin overlying the muscles also relaxes, smoothing out the visible lines. Over a period of on average 3- 4 months, the treatment wears off and wrinkles slowly return.

There is no “one size fits all” at MUMS. Antiwrinkle treatments are customised for every face and bespoke treatment plans can be designed to achieve safe, stunning, and natural-looking results. Your treatment plan will look at your muscle strength, wrinkle pattern, asymmetries, skin quality and desired outcomes.

The procedure takes between 10-30 minutes to carry out. The discomfort is minimal (at the time of injection only) as very fine needles are used and local anaesthetic cream can be used. There is no recovery time involved and sports can be recommenced the following day. A consent is completed with pre procedure photos.  An after-care leaflet is provided and a follow up 2-3 weeks after the injection.

The initial effects of treatment become visible within 72 hours, but the maximum effect is reached in about 1-2 weeks. The effect of treatment generally lasts for 3 to 6 months. In a very small number of individuals, the injection does not work as satisfactorily or for as long as usual.

Aftercare following anti-wrinkle treatments.

Downtime - Antiwrinkle treatments usually have very minimal downtime. You may experience redness and swelling at the injection sites and these usually settle down within 30-60minutes.

The first 24 hours - It is important to avoid the following:

  • Rubbing or massaging the treated area. This prevents the product from spreading to other muscles that we do not want to treat and reduces the chances of things like asymmetry or a droopy eye lid (ptosis). These are reversible side effects but can take months to settle.
  • avoid exercise or strenuous activity.
  • avoid exposure to excessive heat.
  • avoid any alcohol as this can increase your risk of bruising.

Bruising - Can be common and most superficial bruising of the skin disappears after 7-10 days. They are common around the eyes and can be hidden with makeup in the event that you develop one.

Maximum effect - Antiwrinkle treatments can take up to 14 days for the final effect to show but if you have any concerns or experience any unusual symptoms you can contact MUMS and have a free of charge remote consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • As for all injectable treatments, please come with no make-up, foundation or similar on your skin. This will reduce the risk of an infection. To reduce the risk of bruising: - avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior - stop any fish oil supplements at least 5 days prior - stop any garlic, ginger, gingko biloba or ginseng in high doses - avoid any anti-inflammatory medicines (ibuprofen, aspirin etc) for 5 days before your treatment if possible. Prescription medicines that can make bruising much more common include warfarin or other anti-coagulants. If these are prescribed by your GP, it's not recommended to stop them. You can still have injectables, but you should expect bruising to be much more common and obvious.
  • You can go back to your normal daily activities after a treatment except for two simple rules: 1) Don't massage, rub, or wash the areas injected until the next day after your treatment. This also includes not doing things like having a massage, facial or similar straight after an anti-wrinkle treatment. (For at least 12 hours afterwards) 2) Avoid sports, exercise, or vigorous activity for 12 hours afterwards. These rules help prevent the anti-wrinkle product spreading and affecting other muscles of the face that we don't want to treat. Failure to follow these increases the chance of complications, most importantly eyelid or eyebrow drooping. These are both avoidable and reversible side effects but can take several weeks or even months to settle. Avoiding alcohol after any injectable treatment until the following day also reduces your risk of worsened bruising.
  • The most common side effects include: - Mild discomfort during the procedure - very temporary swellings and redness (that disappear within minutes) - bruising (always a risk when a needle is used) Rarer side effects include: - In less than 1% of cases, patients can very rarely experience eyebrow or eyelid heaviness (called a 'ptosis'). This is very rare, temporary, and often resolves in three or four weeks on its own. This might be caused by a failure to follow the aftercare rules described above. In this scenario, some special eyedrops might be prescribed to you to help lift the heavy eyelid but you'll need to be reviewed in person first.
  • The injections only take minutes to perform, and no special measures are needed. Dr Ash uses the smallest needles available, and most patients are pleasantly surprised at how easy the process is.
  • There are just a few but important conditions that are contraindications to anti-wrinkle treatments: - Pregnancy or breastfeeding. (Patients trying for a baby, undergoing IVF or who are unsure if they are pregnant will also be refused treatments) - Rare neurological diseases such as Myasthenia Gravis Those taking the following medicines should also not have these treatments: - Aminoglycoside antibiotics (Gentamycin, Neomycin, Streptomycin, etc) - Penicillamine (used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis) - A known allergy to human albumin A detailed medical history will be taken prior to your treatment but it is your responsibility to declare any medical problems to us in good time.
  • If the recommended dose is done on the day of your treatment, the results will last 2-4 months on average. Most people therefore come every 3-4 months to help maintain a consistent appearance.
