Adults and children aged two years and above should receive one single dose of into the shoulder muscle.
This vaccine is recommended for adults at greater risk, especially those aged over 65yrs and babies. This protects against 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria, some of which are common and often cause serious illness. This vaccination has been shown to reduce the risk for pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis.
The vaccine protects you from a very serious and sometimes fatal pneumococcal infection.
There are no serious side effects listed for either the childhood or adult versions of the vaccine and this vaccination gives greater protection, but as with all vaccinations – it is not guaranteed that the vaccination will 100% guarantee immunity. It is usual for the vaccination to provide some protection from approximately three weeks post vaccination.
1 dose for adults usually provides long term protection.
In children below two years of age, the vaccine is given by injection into the thigh muscle. The vaccination schedule depends on the age of the child and should be based on official recommendations:
Children aged between six weeks and six months are normally given four doses. The first three doses are given with an interval of one month between each dose. The fourth dose, the booster, is given between 11 and 15 months of age. Alternatively, when pneumococcal is given as part of a routine immunisation programme, two doses can be given at the ages of two and four months, followed by a booster at 11 to 15 months of age.
Children aged between seven months and 11 months should first receive two doses with an interval of at least one month followed by a third dose in the second year.
Children between 12 and 23 months of age should receive two doses with an interval of at least two months.
This pneumonia vaccine protects your baby against a very serious and sometimes fatal pneumococcal infection.
