Although rare, Japanese Encephalitis is a serious infection from mosquito bites. Having private Japanese encephalitis vaccination at MUMS Solihull, before travelling to an area of risk – can prevent you getting infected. The mosquito’s spread the virus. The virus is found in India, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia.
No vaccine provides 100% immunity, but it is wise to immunise against Japanese Encephalitis if you are travelling to an area of high risk. Using insect repellent, mosquito nets, wearing long sleeved tops and trousers and getting this vaccination are all important factors for travellers.
The symptoms include – headache, temperature, nausea, abdominal pain, seizures, and fits. Hospital treatment is required, and Japanese Encephalitis is life threatening.
We recommend the first dose to be given at least 5 weeks before you travel. We advise that the second dose is given 28 days after the first dose. Protection is obtained from 7 days after the 2nd dose.
We offer the accelerated course if your travel is imminent – the first dose being at least 2 weeks before travel.
You are protected for 1 year following the 2nd vaccine and a booster is recommended a year later.
Our doctors will inject the vaccine in your upper arm. Side effects include a temperature and muscle pain.
We also offer the accelerated vaccination for adults – which means that dose 2 can be given 7 days after dose 1.
It is important that both doses are given at least 7 days before travel.
Boosters can be given between 1 and 2 years after the first vaccination.
