MUMS Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Vijay Iyer and MUMS Private GPs, Dr Rajib, and Dr Nazish – administer Private Rabies travel vaccinations to children and adults.
3 doses – the 1st dose and then the 2nd dose 3 days after and the 3rd dose 4 days after.
Protection by immunisation against Rabies is recommended for those at risk because of travel or work. It is important to reduce your risk of getting Rabies – a serious infection which affects both brain and nerves and in most cases is fatal. It is caught from the bite or scratch of an infected animal, usually a dog. If you are travelling to an area where Rabies is present, you should be wise and immunise.
As with all vaccines, 100% immunity cannot be guaranteed put vaccination helps prevent Rabies if you have been exposed.
Pregnant women and those breastfeeding should not have the Rabies Vaccine.
We recommend the vaccine is given at least 8 weeks before travel.
Booster doses are not required, and a full course will keep you immunised for at least 1 or 2 years.
Side effects of the vaccine include headache, temperature, and nausea and sometimes a rash. You cannot get Rabies from the vaccine.
MUMS GPs offer the Rabies Vaccine as well as Rabies Immunity Tests.
You ought to be vaccinated if you are travelling to an area known to be prevalent for Rabies and especially if you are staying for a month or longer.
Even if you have been vaccinated, you should still take precautions.
