Full Abdominal Ultrasound Scan

At MUMS we offer Full Abdominal Ultrasound Scan to patients aged 16 and over.

MUMS radiographers and sonographers offer full abdominal ultrasound scans.
This type of diagnostic test does not use any form of radiation, it is safe, non-invasive and reliable. Bouncing sound waves off your body’s tissue and organs – our clinicians can see detailed images to examine your full abdominal area to look for the presence of abnormalities. The procedure takes around 30 minutes. Using ultrasound to assess the abdominal area helps clinicians identify prostate conditions before they become serious or unmanageable.

During the abdominal ultrasound scan we examine the following organs:

  • Liver
  • Gall Bladder
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen
  • Kidneys
  • Appendix
  • Urinary Tract
  • Bladder
  • Prostate
  • Biliary systems
  • We can also examine the blood vessels that lead to some of the organs, like the portal vein and aorta

MUMS sonographers and radiographers can evaluate the cause of stomach pain or bloating, check kidney and gall bladder stones, liver disease, cysts and tumours and many other conditions. Our Consultant General Surgeon can see you for follow up to discuss any abnormalities found on the scan.

Your doctor may recommend that you have an abdominal ultrasound if you're at risk of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. In fact, it is recommended for male smokers or ex-smokers aged between 65 and 75 to have an abdominal ultrasound scan to rule out abdominal aortic aneurism.

There is no need for a referral – you can self-refer for peace of mind.

We ask you to refrain from eating, drinking anything but water, and smoking for at least 6 hours before the procedure and attend with a full bladder. Please continue taking any regular medicine as normal.

Once arrived at MUMS we will check your details to make sure they are correct and then our chaperone assistants will guide into the scanning room where we will ask you to lie down on the examination bed and expose your abdominal area. All our scanning rooms have locks on doors and drapes to ensure privacy and we will provide you with modesty towels so you will not feel exposed. Gel is used to glide the transducer and pictures and measurements of the abdominal area are taken by the clinician.

You will be given a detailed report and printed pictures that you can give to your referring clinician and a copy will be in your MUMS electronic medical record should you wish to consult with the Consultant or Private GP at MUMS.

There are no waiting times at MUMS. We offer abdominal ultrasound most days of week. The cost of Full Abdominal Ultrasound is £295.00
