Ultrasound Scan of the Male Pelvis - Bladder, Kidney and Prostate, Home Visit Ultrasound Scan of the Male Pelvis

At MUMS we offer ultrasound scan of the Male Pelvis - Bladder, Kidney and Prostate as a combined scan to patients aged 16 and over.

An ultrasound of your bladder is performed to diagnose bladder problems such as the bladder wall, diverticula (pouches) of the bladder, bladder stones and large bladder tumours. MUMS radiographers, sonographers and Consultant Urologist – offers prostate ultrasound too as part of the male pelvis ultrasound. This diagnostic is safe, non-invasive, and reliable.

Ultrasound can look at causes for incomplete emptying of the bladder (difficulty in passing water) and depending on what is identified.

Prostate Ultrasound can show the prostate gland which is helpful when diagnosing prostate problems. For example – difficulty urinating or if there has been a prostate blood test result indicating raised levels. Prostate ultrasound will show whether the prostate gland is enlarged. Ultrasound of the prostate is risk free. Please also note that this scan only gives details of size and overall general appearance of the prostate. If more dedicated assessment of the prostate is needed, as recommended by this scan – then this is done by a trans-rectal approach and would need urologist intervention. MUMS Consultant Urologist offers this service.

We also offer prostate blood tests.

Waiting for a male pelvic ultrasound with the NHS can be frustrating – when all you want is a scan of the bladder and prostate to find the cause of urinary problems or stones or tumours – and other conditions such as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).  MUMS Sonographers can also check the seminal vesicles and check for hernias.

Our clinicians can see detailed images to examine your prostate and bladder to look for the presence of abnormalities, cancer and other prostate and bladder related conditions. The procedure takes around 30 minutes.

There is no preparation for this apart from drinking 1.5 litres of water before the scan. There is no risk of radiation. The patient can return to daily tasks straight away after the test.

We can offer peace of mind and reassurance with high calibre radiographers performing a scan on your bladder and prostate. Ultrasound is non-invasive, safe, and reliable. Bladder and prostate ultrasound scans are available at MUMS with no waiting times, speedy results and private bladder ultrasound and prostate ultrasound scans are performed by expert sonographers.

MUMS patients can self-refer or bring a referral from their clinician.

A Male Pelvis scan which includes the bladder, kidney and prostate - costs £280.00.

You will be given a report at the end of the scan. The report can be analysed by MUMS clinicians for any onward referral or to see MUMS Consultant Urologist.

MUMS Consultant Urological Surgeon, Mr Dev Sarmah also offers a ONE STOP SHOP Consultation and Cystoscopy Clinic.

This service is generally for men and women aged over 40yrs with the following conditions:

  • Haematuria – often referred to as blood in the urine, frank blood, or persistent microscopic blood in the urine
  • Bladder infection or recurring bladder Infections, recurring urinary tract infections ( UTI’s )
  • Suspected bladder cancer
  • Persistent catheter problems with frequent blockages or difficult urethral strictures
  • Patients not wanting to wait for NHS Cystoscopy either as a diagnostic procedure or as follow up for bladder cancer checks

MUMS radiographers and sonographers use a painless, non-invasive technique – using sound waves that bounce off tissue and organs to examine the bladder and prostate.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No, you do not need a referral, you can just book in for a scan. We will provide you with a full report at the end of the scan and you can forward a copy to your GP as well.
  • We will ask you to not eat or drink anything after 9pm the night before the scan, except for water. If you have a full abdominal scan, it is good to drink water as we can measure your bladder before and after emptying to make sure there is no urine retention.
  • You get the results immediately after the scan, we email you a copy of the report and we can give you a printed copy for your GP as well.
