If you opt for a sexual health consultation in which to have the test, then you will be followed up with a telephone consultation to have the results explained to you. If you opt for a simple phlebotomy appointment, we will email your results to you.

The Hepatitis B Core Antibodies blood test is taken at MUMS and sent to our partner laboratory who will test it under the microscope to see if you are actively infected with the Hepatitis B Virus.

The Hepatitis B Core Antibodies Test is often referred to as HBV antibody test. This is not a Hepatitis B Immunity Test to test your immunity or response to the Hepatitis B Vaccination. Neither is it a Hepatis B surface antigen test.

MUMS GPs may want to see if you have a liver infection caused by Hepatitis B virus. If you have symptoms of Hepatitis B – MUMS GPs may choose this test.

MUMS Private GPs also vaccinate patients against Hepatitis B. However, although being immunised against Hepatitis B offers protection – if you have already contracted Hepatitis B – there is no cure. You should take precautions to prevent you giving the virus to other people.

Hepatitis B Core Antibody does not give protection whatsoever. It does not mean that patients are immune to Hepatis B virus. It will show whether you have been infected with the Hepatitis B Virus previously if the result is positive or reactive.

The Hepatitis B core antibody is what your own immune system produces after you have been infected with Hepatitis B virus. This test will show whether you have had it in the past or have a new infection.

MUMS offer the Hepatitis B test which is a surface antigen test – to see if you currently have Hepatitis B or if this Hepatitis B Core Antibody test to see if you have had it in the past or the Hepatitis B Immunity test to see if you are immune.
